« Top Ten Reasons Why There Are No Smoke Detectors In JapanMemo to Japan: AMAZING NEW TECHNOLOGIES! »

Don Tacos

2005-02-01 | by Jamie | Categories: Deep Thoughts

Yesterday's post about the things lacking in Japanese technology was a little negative in tone, and since I'm trying to build up the courage to sign away my life for another year on JET I thought I'd try thinking more positive thoughts today. That's why I decided to write about my favorite Japanese food... Don Tacos! In Japan you can buy Doritos chips, but for some reason the kind they sell here tastes like total crap. Sometimes foreign food stores will have better tasting ones imported from Australia, but they usually cost a fortune and have suspicious expiration dates that extend well longer than they would back home. Pretty much anything with a strong flavour, such as curry or anything Mexican, tends to become very bland tasting when it is Japanized for this market. That's why Don Tacos is such a nice surprise because it tastes great and is even a little spicy. It's just one of the nice little things that keeps me going, and I recommend that you try them out if you haven't already. I just hope the Frente Corporation appreciates all the free publicity I'm giving them.

Update: Uh oh, the story I did yesterday has just been linked by Fark.com (one of the most popular news sites on the net). I think I'm in trouble now. They have a reputation for "Farking" websites by consuming all their bandwidth in a few minutes. Anyway, if you'd like to read their nerdy ramblings about my post then check it out here.

If you want a REAL spicy snack, you should try 'gobi'. It comes in a small black bag and they're the spiciest cornchips Ive ever eaten. It will blow your mind.

BTW, that fark site looks suspiciously like your other site...hmmm. Nerrrrrrrds!!!

I was doing my daily browsing at Fark when lo and behold, your link was there. Just hoped your site didn't get farked...

I like the new design, very upbeat and "genki" (this is the first time I've seen it). Now I must get back to my tuna & mayo on mozzarella cheese toast.

Catchya.

Jamie, that's funny that your site is on fark.com. Most of those people are pretty crazy, and full of crap, like everyone on bigdaikon. I thought your article was funny and biting, which is needed at times. Enjoy the pit that is Noheji.

You can read my replies under the name "Franceisbrave". I'm really bored at work today, so I have nothing better to do than argue with nerds. I'm starting to get a little tired of it though and might go for a walk or something.

KS thanks so much for all the great shopping advice. I really appreciate all your useful comments. I hope you come back to Avoidinglife often.

Franko, the sites wouldn't have gone down except it was the last day of the month and almost all of my bandwidth had already been used up by a large video file that was deep linked from another site several weeks ago. Well at least it made the Farkers happy that they Farked another site. I don't know why this sort of thing makes them happy, but it seems to anyway.

I need to make a comment about your previous post *1-31-05*
Maybe you said those things because you live in middle of no where. if you lived in tokyo, you wud see more smoke detectors, central heating, ovens, (there is a thing called OVEN-RENJI microwave and oven combined together), pills, and ATMs.
its cool that you make a web site but what if ppl get wrong impression of japan because of you?
not cool right???

Wow, even after closing the comments people are still finding ways to complain about my little article. If I knew it was so easy to touch a nerve with Japanophiles I would have posted something like this a long time ago. Just as Andy Kaufman once pissed off people by wrestling women, I shall gain my ticket to fame and fortune by pissing off Japan-fans.

Your last couple of entries remind me of correspondance from a homesick student of mine comparing England to Aomori. She was in London and desparately homesick for the Tsugaru - until the central heating turned on!

I've lived here so long now that I don't miss much anymore, but I had my own list when I came to Aomori... and a clothes drier was at the top of it! You haven't known misery until you've had a couple loads of diapers hanging in the damp above your head for a week while you wait for the sun to shine.
