Jamie's Guide to Avoiding Life Post-JET

2005-03-10 | by Jamie | Categories: Deep Thoughts

The most famous gaijin in Japan, the NHK jerks. Could this be you?

Recently I've been hearing a fair bit of moaning and groaning from JETs who will soon be losing their cushy jobs and tossed back into the heartless real world come August 3rd. Well, buck up 'cause I'm here to help! Perhaps I'm not the best authority when it comes to giving advice on this matter but since my website is called Avoidinglife.com I feel it's my duty to at least try.

There are plenty of money making opportunities in Japan other than resorting to NOVA:

The obvious.. sign up as a 4th year JET and "teach" at an elementary school. This only serves to delay the inevitable, but if you haven't gotten the wheels in motion yet to do anything else then maybe a stay of execution is just what you need.

Start an Internet company selling Japanese toys and porn to nerds around the world.

Start a successful store chain by reselling garbage you find on the street.

Write your own self-published novel about what it's like to be a gaijin in Japan. Then email every blogger in Japan and ask them to review the book on their website.

Sell drugs. Okay, it's a little risky and the Japanese criminal justice system is pretty tough on those that get caught... but hey, at least they won't execute you like they do in many other Asian countries.

Marry a divorced Japanese woman that is living off of a big settlement. Perhaps these are a little hard to come by in Aomori, but I'm sure Tokyo must be full of them.

Busking. Tokyo is just full of gaijin playing music on the streets and selling little shitty pieces of hand made jewelery. Just play up the exotic foreigner angle. You should have that skill down by now.

Colour your hair and host your own wacky English language learning show on NHK.

Get a job as a university professor. I'm not sure exactly how to do this, but there seem to be quite a few gaijin English professors everywhere you go. Talk to one of them for advice. If you can land this gig, you're set for life!

You see, there are so many options available to you! This is just the tip of the iceberg too! If none of these options sound appealing just remember, Iraq is always looking for new civilian contractors to help rebuild the country. There's probably no better place to go right now to avoid life than Iraq. Good luck!

...or you can join the French Foreign Legion like Luke apparently wants to do. Sounds a lot like JET, but with more petty theives among the ranks.

Hey man, watch it! Pak-kun's from my hometown. And Bob Sapp, too, for that matter. Heh. (Elvira is, too, actually.) But now I'm reminded that you didn't include K-1 fighting as a potential career move. It "worked" for Akebono... And Giant Silva.
