Let's try out the new camera

2005-04-20 | by Jamie | Categories: Photos

A sign warning motorists that Noheji town is a "Silver Zone". It's good advice not to take this warning lightly, unless you want an ojisan decorating your car's bumper.

Here are the first batch of photos from my fancy new camera. I must admit they are not too exciting, nor are they as beautiful as Luke's many Iwaki-san shots. They are just random things from around town and at work I felt like photographing. Click "Read More" to begin.

Follow up:

I was sick with a bad flu all last week. I'm not looking too healthy here.

To help expediate my recovery I rushed to see Dr. McDonald and get a grease injection.

A typical health propoganda poster warning students of the dangers of make-up.

Stick with me Mr. Textbook and someday your dream might become a reality.

I really had to pee, but the staff restrooms were closed and it looks like this big septic tank on wheels had something to do with it.

All over the school right now are posters trying to persuade first year students to join various clubs. Not sure what this one could possibly be for. Anyone care to translate?

I never understand what the posters at school are about, but they always seem so interesting.

These are 3 of the 5 sports club busses Noheji High School owns. They mostly just sit here all year unused. I wish we had an English Club bus, or even an English club for that matter. If we did I'd paint it like the Mystery Machine and take my students around Aomori solving ghost related mysteries!

Yup, it's almost the end of April and there's still plenty of snow in Noheji.

This is the shed where the teachers hide out to smoke these days.

All winter long there's been construction going on next to my house under giant tarped scafolding. The tarp was finally removed this week to reveal a new police station!

Which is definately a step up from the old police station.

Well that's it. Thanks for making it this far.

I thought that was perhaps it, but what's with the black bandaged hand? Emphasizing finger injuries doesn't seem like the best way to draw in new members.

I think that the black, bandaged hand is just an odd expression of the Japanese School Sports cult of pain. The giant kanji at the top reads "haikyu" which is a little known Japanese word for volleyball. The rest of the poster says, "Come hither! Volleyball Club. In the volleyball club we are looking for new members and a manager. Anyone who's interested, by all means come take a look." The black hand is captioned: "One ball filled with spirit!" The cover article of the Jump magazine is about the "circle of misdeeds prevention" (as opposed to, I suppose, something more serious, like "crime prevention").

Cult of pain eh? Japanese people really do love to suffer. Thanks for the explanation Luke! I wish I had my own mini-Luke that followed me everywhere and explained all the strange things around me.

Is the freaking sky completely white in that Silver Zone picture or am I seeing things?

The freaking sky is often completely white in Noheji as it's so often filled with snow. This time however it looks white because I was shooting into a setting sun, so the camera is trying to deal with the blinding light. Same goes for the police station pics.

yeah...wish we had a Silver Zone sign where I live. That might have saved me from getting hit by the wonderful ojiisan a year and a half ago.

I think the SilverZone sign only encourages the reckless behaviors of the seniors in town. Perhaps you're right, but in my opinion the street would probably be safer without it.
