As a certain uncle of mine likes to point out whenever he visits his former homeland, there's nothing Canadians like to do more than talk about money. That's why I feel it's my patriotic duty to bitch about today's currency exchange rate between Canada and Japan. When I came to Japan three years ago one Canadian dollar was worth roughly eighty-six Japanese yen. Now as the title suggests, the balance of power has shifted and the CAD is worth more than the JPY.

The Canadian dollar keeps getting stronger and stronger, and since most of my wealth is in Japanese yen, I'm not all that pleased about it. By my calculations it now costs about $35$160 more for each 100,000 yen ($1000) I bring back home from Japan than it would have cost when I first came here. In fact the Canadian dollar is at its strongest level since 1978! Unlike my brilliant economist cousin, I don't know much about money stuff, but I'm willing to bet this has something to do with oil prices. Canada is a huge exporter of oil, while Japan on the other hand imports over 99% of its oil. If oil prices continue to go up, soon everyone in Alberta will be driving around in Cadillacs and wearing Rolex watches (unless of course they already are).

With many economist types predicting that oil prices may soon go as high as 80 or even 100 dollars a barrel, I guess it's good that I'm getting out of here with my yen before it becomes as worthless as my pile of Vietnamese dong. I suppose instead of wishing for some natural disaster to strike Alberta as I've been doing, I really should just be happy for the economic success of my homeland. If things continue the way they are going, maybe soon I'll be able to get a gold rimmed Caddilac of my own. That is of course assuming Alberta doesn't separate from Canada and keep all its oil money for itself.

Haven't you lost 160CAD per 100,000 yen? Every CAD now costing 16 yen more than when you arrived?

Crap! I think you're right. I guess I'm not quite as good at math as you. 160 bucks is actually way worse! Maybe I should stay in Japan. :(

Well, unless one of the Sachs has an email address ending in yahoo.ie and is using a computer with a Japanese IP address I doubt that he's really who he claims to be.

With all the Irish ALTs in Aomori there's no telling who the culprit might be.

Since I came back to Canada a year ago the dollar has only become stronger and stronger... The only choice I can see is to become American, their dollar is CRAP now. OR do what I did, and just keep it all in yen until the dollar goes down. Although this method seems to have backfired on me; shouldve changed it as soon as I came back, but you know how I felt back then.

I heard that you were not supposed to export more than a certain sum when you left Japan so you have probably been loading up your visitors (ie mom and dad) with huge amounts of cash to sneak back into Canada; Anyway Katherine told me you were thinking of living in Vancouver? what a gay place to go to. the euro is still strong; go figure why when every country is running huge deficits. I'm glad to see your getting into the Patterson mode so that when you go back to sip drinks on the deck of the cottage you can discuss interest rate fluctuations with the rest of the family. I'd feel bad for you if you had'nt spent the last three years on your blog claiming you have done zero teaching work in japan so just be glad they have actually paid you something its all robbery .
ps this week is Savoy week in MacDonalds they are putting "famous local types of cheese" in all the hamburgers. The newspapers have discovered that this "famous local cheese" is actually substandard crap imporetd from Holland so keep tuned for MacDo restaurants blowing up in Savoy this week. I'm not going into anyone of them for at least a month.

Jamie and Mark, I am Jeffrey Sachs. I think my website says it all. I shouldn't be spending my time on your monetary woes, I am very busy being a Professor at Columbia University. My favorite color is blue. You see I must be Jeffrey Sachs, how could I know such personal information if I wasn't. What's more, I even use degenerate American spelling for color etc... Yours Sincerely, Jeff

Don't worry, I have no plans on moving to gay-ass Vancouver. I really don't know yet what I'll do or where I'll go. Since it is now officially 2 months until I return, I guess I had better start thinking about it pretty soon. With the value of the loonie climbing and climbing, maybe I should just join the ranks of Japan's visa overstayers and live off my yen until it runs out or I get deported.

Well Jeff, doubtful state of affairs. At least there is a good outlook on pork bellies and orange juice.

I agree you have been screwed on the exchange rate over the past 3 yrs. I would only have been worse if you were going home to Barzil. If $ is all that matters you could move to Mexico or the US, the only two countries where you'd get more than when you left :) See you soon!

Dude, when I arrived in Japan my A$ was worth Y58. When I left it was worth Y98. So, it cost me a shitload to set up when I got there and there was bugger-all to take home. Of course, maybe the fact I drank and travelled away all my money probably exacerbated the problem...
