Who is Spoo?

Mari has an interesting article about a new craze in Japan surrounding a character named 'Spoo'. It all started with this video clip (edit: actually this clip) from one of my favorite Japanese kids shows. In it the two hosts try to draw a picture of one of the show's main characters, Spoo, with pretty funny results. The guy draws him correctly, but the woman's drawing is really, really far off the mark. Much like what happened with that Star Wars Kid a while back, the clip has inspired countless Japanese Internet nerds on 2CH to create their own spoof videos. Will he have the same impact on English speaking nerds as Domokun did a few years back? Since nobody outside Japan knows the original character, I kind of doubt it.

Update: I found this other Spoo drawing video from the show. This time Spoo himself joins in the drawing fun as everyone waits to see what the female host comes up with this time. Sadly it seems like she has learned to draw a pretty good Spoo since the first episode aired, though it's still the worst of the bunch.

I love how the man can't stop laughing at the end of the clip.

Hey Jamie, I read today that there was an earthquake just offshore of Aomori. Feel any effects in Noheji? Hope everything is alright.

Thanks for your concern Jeremy, but I didn't notice any earthquake. I guess it must have been pretty weak.

I like how the show is geared towards what is undoubtedly the Japanese equivalent of the USA's "Barney demographic," which is to say little kids, and they've got the drawing song done by a growling, fake-metal guy.

It's pretty amusing when you see the little puppet animals singing along to what are, I guess, harmless lyrics, yet it sounds like something Pantera would play if they went on a really, really bad bender in Tokyo.

The drawing, though, was hilarious!

Actually the version of the video I linked to was someone's re-edit of the original video. The real music is much more kid friendly as you can see here:

I didn't notice when I wrote the article that the music had been altered because the sound wasn't working on the computer I was using at the time.

Well, NHK decided to bring the hammer down on the original video and have it nuked from YouTube, so I'll just take your word for it. It's still funny no matter how you slice it!
