Buried Alive

12/22/04 | by Jamie | Categories: Deep Thoughts

Here's what my car has looked like every morning for the past 3 days:

Today just about everyone has the day off work because it's a national holiday in Japan... everyone but me that is. My school has some kind of presentation day, so here I am. I think Noheji is one of the only schools in the ken that does this. It was pretty interesting actually. There was a play by the drama club, some guitar playing, the brass band etc. etc. The highlight was this incredible show put on by the "sports classes" featuring some really amazing rope jumping and marching. I know that sounds sarcastic, but it really was cool. I guess you had to be there.

Tonight I have my "bonenkai" or "forget the year party" with my coworkers. I'm dreading it because it means I'm going to be presented with an enormous feast of truly disgusting food that I'm sure I won't even touch. The picture above comes from a blog called The Sneeze, that includes a section called Steve Don't Eat It! Some dude named Steve tries to find the most disgusting foods in the world, eats them and then reports on his findings. Of course natto (Japanese fermented soy beans) is included.

Noheji by the way is completely and totally burried under snow. I'll post photos on my next update so you can see what I'm talking about. Noheji was all over the news because it was so bad. I think in the last three days we must have gotten more snow than we did all of last winter. My car had a good foot or more of fresh snow on it this morning. Thankfully it finally stopped snowing for now.

What I have to look forward to tonight

SethThat is vile. I've never seen that much snow in my life. And that's one day? No wonder you're boycotting snowshoveling.

I think I'm gonna print your pictures and put them on my windows to simulate snow outside.

FrancoisIt's funny how "local" is the snow. I live just 20 minutes away from Noheji and we have about 7cm of snow on the ground. That's fine for me. I just want snow in the mountains for skiing anyway!!!

HughIsn't that what Noheji is known for? I was disappointed last year to hear when you WEREN'T getting tons of snow. See you in the spring, if you survive. This winter should be a big one I hear.

jamieA teacher tried to explain to me the reason why Noheji gets so much snow. Something to do with the north wind and being stuck between Hakkoda and Shimokita. Basically Noheji is the arm pit of Aomori, and tons of moisture just builds up here. Just come to my house sometime and smell for yourself.
