High school English has little impact on Japanese

08/30/04 | by Jamie | Categories: Links and Articles

Here's an interesting article I found that does a good job summarizing the state of English education in this country. My favorite line:

'It would also be nice if we have competent teachers, not like those JET teachers or part-time housewives who come and teach English for 45 minutes once every month.'

Thank God there aren't enough competent teachers or I would be out of a job. Nothing like getting paid to be on holiday! Doin' a third year keeps sounding better and better.

HughNevermind that students are slaves to the entrance exam, studying from books from the 50's, and the Japanese English teachers can't speak English, it's the fault of those damn untrained ALTs! To teach them a lesson, I'll just play on the internet for the rest of the school day.

JacobAngry Hugh. You're a TRAINED professional now Hugh, you've had two whole years to become a good teacher. ;) Fingers need to be pointed...and the ALT at the internet is an easy target. Don't worry it isn't the first article to poke a little fun at the JET program, and won't be the last.

JamieI just want to know where I can meet some of these English speaking "Part time housewives". Maybe they'll have some time for me when they're off duty.

HughTongue was firmly in cheek in my last post. I've read many more articles blaming jets too, so we do make easy targets. I get much more riled up when the conbini doesn't have sea chicken onigiri in stock.
