Mmmmmm... canned whale!

Here's a small gallery of random photos from the last couple of weeks...

...

Assamushi has lots of exotic food for sale at its hotels that I'm sure PeTA members would just love. In addition to minke whale, you could also get deer, seal, sealion, bear and wild boar.

Grocery stores in Japan almost never sell corn on the cob, so I was surprised to see this corn sort-of on the cob for sale at Noheji. They also sell a 100% husk-free variety of corn that comes vacume-sealed.

Due to the popularity of insect fighting video games among young boys, stores all over Japan have recently begun to sell these scary looking beetles as pets.

Appuri-chan! The super kawaii mascot for Aomori Prefecture.

Former sumo star and kids TV host Konishiki graces the cover of Duet guide dog magazine. Raising money for guide dogs seems to be a popular charity in Japan, and I guess this magazine has something to do with that.

An ad for M.C. Hammer's new line of Japanese workman's clothing.

I travelled to Aomori last week to watch the ichi nensei students march around. Here's a tight shot of a sea of high school students.

A member of Noheji's photography club called me "chotto sukebe" for taking this shot of the "Seiai Pretty Girls" cheerleading team.

They weren't the only pretty girls in the crowd.

It was very windy as you can see.

But it wasn't windy enough to knock the hats off all the ojisans in attendance.

This year is Noheji High School's 80th anniversary, which ment my students got to carry a big banner and cool little flags.

JamieI wonder if they have any claw games at the arcades in Tokyo where you can catch live bugs... and make them fight!

JacobI was at that long long long sports day. 1.5 hours waiting for it to start, 1 hour parade into the stadium, .5 hour speeches you couldn't hear b/c of the wind, .5 hour parade out of the stadium. 1.5 hours watching teachers trying to control our students after it ended. Better sitting on some grass than at my desk though.

JamieI'm surprised by how many JETs were there that I didn't notice. Yeah it was really dull (as I knew it would be). The reason I went was because I forgot the power cord for my computer that day and I knew I'd be even more bored at the office.

AzimSeeing that You're from Canada... why all of the whining about winters in Aomori in Your previous posts?

Jamie1. There is way more snow in Aomori than in Canadian winter... and that's including the North Pole.

2. Japanese people seem to prefer to suffer in the cold rather than dress warmly and live in warm homes. Maybe that works for them, but it doesn't work for me.

David in TOJamie, we're wimps in the snow not because we're Canadians, but because we're from Toronto. I think Canucks from anywhere else in the country (except lovely Vancouver)would have no problem in the Aomori snow.

JoshuaMan, Minnesota has way more snow in the winter. Clearly, you had it easy in your part of Canada. Heck, South Dakota had more snow, and remember, its the more southern of the dakotas.

JamieHi Jenny! Yeah, I've seen that game. They have variations of it all over Japan. Can you really call those oversized shrimp lobsters though?

Joshua, I think I somebody from Minnesota who might disagree with you there.

Joshua ZimmermanI was in Southern Minnesota. And Southern South Dakota. Believe me. Snow sucks here. Must I dig up some photos? (I would know, I had to shovel the driveway all through high school)

Thank goodness I'll be in Hiroshima-ken! I really hate the snow.

KateJoshua, no! I grew up near Mankato, and I can vouch for the fact that although the winter temperatures are mild compared to Minnesota, the snow in Aomori is much, much worse. Not only does it snow marble-sized flakes almost every day, the narrow roads, poor plowing infrastructure, lack of space for snow disposal, and irregular sidewalks make it even more of a hassle. Maybe it's hard to tell in the video, but it's a LOT of snow!

Joshua ZimmermanI guess I stand horribly corrected.

You can say one thing about Minnesota, South & North Dakota. When the first flake falls, the snow plows are out. It would really suck to have all that snow and bad plowing.
