My new IXY 600

Trying out my brand new Canon IXY 600

As you may have noticed there haven't been too many videos on this site lately. There are a number of reasons for this, one of which is simply that I haven't been taking my camera around with me as much as I used to. The thing is just so big that it's always a pain to deal with if I'm out having fun. I also got sick of all the "Oh no... look out... here comes Jamie with his camera!" remarks. This new camera is easy to carry and more importantly conceal. It's a new 7 megapixel model from the same Canon IXY series Hugh and Luke both use. I bought it for just over 4 man after searching on Kakaku. The lowest retail price I could find in Aomori was still over a man more. Kakaku is the only way to buy big ticket electronics in Japan and not get ripped off from what I can tell. Any better suggestions? KS are you there?

GlennI've got the 3.2 megapixel version in the series, the video is nice on it, and even better, people really don't realize you are taking video.

Hope to see some more good videos!

HughNice choice Jamie, but I've read complaints about that camera's video mode, because some people can hear a highpitched whine noise when there's no other noise in the shot, can you hear this noise? Anyways, Im still jealous, and yeah Kakaku is regarded highly I think. But don't worry, people will still say "oh no, here comes Jamie with his sukebe-cam", because I get those comments all the time with my tiny brick cam.

JamieI'm an ALT, that's how I can afford all my expensive electronics.

Yeah Hugh, you've really taken my place as the guy to look out for a parties as of late. Come August there will be a whole new batch of noobies who won't know about you or your tricks.

Beckham, you're making me jealous! You can't get chicken balls at Chinese restaurants over here. It's amazing you were able to type so much on my old computer without it crashing. Give my best to the team.

JamieOh, and yeah I also read that about the hissing noise but so far I can't detect anything. This thing actually takes really great looking video at its highest setting. Of course you need a really big memory card to capture anything more than a minute or so of footage.

GlennOne thing I'd like to know, is does it focus on things when you move further/closer to an object in video mode, or does it keep the original focus.

I know most others don't, and the only camera I have seen with it is the Sony DSC P100.

Also how is the zoom while recording? Is it worth it?

JamieI'm not sure about the focus stuff, but it does have a digital zoom while recording.

Is it worth it? I don't really understand the question. If you want to take excellent quailty video then a still camera is never a good choice. Panasonic GS series camcorders are what I would recommend.

GlennI have a good video camera, and I am fully aware that still cameras are not the best choice for when it comes to taking video, the employees at electronics stores tell me this all the time, hehe.

I'm just curious to know if it doesn't kill the quality of the video when it's zoomed in, because from what I heard, it uses digital zoom, not optical.

JamieIt's a very slight digital zoom.. like X2 or X3 so I doubt it hurts it too bad.

JamieOn a final note, I was in Towada City this weekend and I noticed this camera for sale at just a little over the price I paid at the new K's Denki. I don't know if the price has suddenly dropped everywhere in Aomori, or if Towada is just a great place to buy electronics.

JamieJust shop around sidney. I searched on Kakuku and got a good price, but my friend Hugh got one even cheaper (under 40000 yen) just by going to a random camera shop. If it costs a lot in your town, try the next town over.
