Quick Update

09/20/04 | by Jamie | Categories: Deep Thoughts

One of Hakodate's many amazing tourist attractions. I'm starting to understand why Japanese tourists are so facinated by places like Niagara Falls or the Grand Canyon. Tourist attractions within Japan are just plain lame!

Just got back from a weekend of fun in Hakodate City in Hokkaido. Hung out with Jacob, Autum, Erica, Hugh and Steph. Apparently Ange, Kate, Sorcha, and a bunch of other newbie JETs were there too but all I ever saw of them was short flashes of blond hair off in the distance. I'm too tired to recount what happend just yet, so I suggest tuning in soon to Steph's site for a description of events and Hugh's site for all the sukebe photos. Well, maybe I have enough energy to post a few interesting nuggets I learned about Erica's love life... nah, too tired. Anyway, I'll have my own photos up eventually, and maybe even a new video before the week is up. By the way, on Friday I head home to Toronto again for 2 weeks. I guess I should be excited, but I still feel like I was just there a short time ago so I'm not all that psyched yet. Anyway to tide you guys over until I post something new on this site, here's a sukebe photo from the Misawa Air Show of a few weeks back:

Like always, you can see more photos from Misawa @ Hugh's.

RichieWould you answer me a few questions please?

First, on the JET application, what did you list (if anything) for your teaching background? What about teacher training?

Had you traveled abroad before contracting with the JET program?

How did you answer, “Proposed direction of current or future profession and its relationship to the JET Program:”?

Did you list any Japan-related studies?

What did you mark as your Japanese language proficiency?

Did you have to take any type of English test at any time during the application process?

I only ask these questions because I’m sitting here looking at the JET application and couldn’t think of a better way to getting the inside scoop than by asking someone who is actually living in Japan on the JET program. If you have any other info I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for your time and answers.

JamieDon't worry about the application. JET will hire just about anyone. Try posting on Big Daikon or one of the many other JET sites for application advice if you're still 'doki doki'.

kateyou second years are so jaded. i thought the pole was nice. especially the part about it becoming a "couple pole, which became the topic of conversation among the people". CUTE!
we don't have concrete electrical poles where i come from!

JamieAnd if you did I bet it would become the topic of conversation among the people for a long time. Ever since The Body left the Governor's mansion Minnesotans have probably been dying for something interesting to happen.

JamieOh wait.. I take that back. I forgot.. you're from the home of the greatest lame tourist attraction of all time... The World's Biggest Ball of Twine! It's no wonder you have such an affection for the pole.

JamieCool, thanks for the info! I vow that someday before I die I'm gonna gaze upon that "glorious huge magestic sphere" with my own two eyes. Actually, I remember once reading that there are in fact two giant twine balls in MN and the owners both claim theirs is the biggest. Ontario has The Big Nickel, the Big Apple (near Hugh's Cottage) and many others... but I'm sure none hold a candle to the twine ball.

JamieLooks like I was wrong... there's only one giant twine ball in MN. The other is in Kansas, but only became bigger than the MN one after the townsfolk added to the original ball created by a lone kook. The MN ball is the only giant twine ball created by a single guy. MichaelJamie,

Love this photo of the J-Babe posing in front of this F-18 J-Fighter!

Two questions: Do you know the exact name of the aircraft pictured? Also, what is the name of Japanese counterpart of jet acrobatics crew? In the US, we have the Thunder Birds and the Blue Angels. What's it in Japan?

Thanks, man. You rule!

jamieThe plane is probably and F16 or maybe an F2 since those are what mostly are flown in Misawa I think. The team is called The Blue Impulse and they fly some kind of trainer jet.
