The Daiso: "The Wal-Mart of dollar stores"

06/09/05 | by Jamie | Categories: Deep Thoughts

Wow, there's even one in Canada!

Sorry if my last few postings have been kind of negative. To make up for it, I thought I'd talk today about one of my favorite things about Japan... namely Daiso!

I've whored a bit for Daiso before but I thought it deserved some extra attention. In case you're not familiar with it, Daiso is the world's greatest dollar store chain. It's all over Japan and is one of the only big chain stores we have in Noheji. In fact Daisos seem to be popping up all over the place these days. It seems like anytime a department store, pachinko parlor or any other business goes under, the next day a Daiso will pop-up in its place. Like Wal-Mart back home, Daiso is sort of like a cancer spreading over the world of Japanese retail, but with even lower every day low prices.

Of course it doesn't sell the highest quality stuff in the world, but you can say the same for most Japanese department stores as well. Still for only 105 yen (including tax) the quality is generally much better than the cheap crap you would expect from a dollar store. What really distinguishes it from dollar stores back home however is the sheer variety of goods for sale. I won't go into all the great stuff you can buy, but suffice to say that if you're not a picky shopper, you can buy just about anything you need for your home short of furniture and electronics. The toy department has lots of cool and weird discounted toys that I can't help but buy. Recently I snagged a bunch of really neat wind-up robot Disney character toys to add to my collection of Transformers models and Japanese road construction crew men. The Daiso in Noheji even has 100 yen Purikura!

Perhaps after JET I'll invest my big savings into Toronto's first Daiso franchise and crush that free turkey giving away jerk Honest Ed once and for all.

DeeHey Jamie. The Daiso in Richmond is HUGE... it has two floors filled with everything you could find here. And yeah, everything costs a toonie, but still better than EFADs or the other dollar stores we have back home.

KE LeeOMG!

I LOVE Daiso so much!
It truly is the ultimate dollar store! The quality is excellent, considering everything in the store is $2.

There is so much to buy in Daiso! No wonder people go in and never seem to come out! While you arelooking for that particular item, you always seem to find five or ten more things you pick up along the way! =.=

I wish that more Daiso stores opened in British Columbia, Canada!

Manisha PhilipDaiso!! What can i say.. it is truely amazing!
It's like a shopping Haven and at such amazing prices.
In Dubai, Daiso items are priced at Dhs 5 each.. most pf them anyway. Its not so much the price as it is the VALUE & Variety one gets here. Over 85,000 products... wow that is a lot to chose from.
I Love Daiso...

NikkiThe Daiso has hit the U.S. I'm in California, so it will be a while before we see it trickle down from the lone store in Washington state. But after visiting the one in Richmond B.C., all I can say is YIPPEE!

RocketI LOVE Daiso! I went to the first one to hit the US, In Washington State. Like someone else said... you can't seem to get out of the store! So much to look at. Very fun, a real shopping pleasure! I think the one here in the US is small... but a lot to see. I can not imagine the larger stores! I hope they bring more. I hope the quailty does not go down, considering in the US everything seems to decrease in quality once it gets going here. Please do not change! I found the bags that vacuum suck out all the air for your closet or suit case items a real HOOT! Cant go wrong with the pink or yellow aluminum foil either!!

I love Daiso (I live in Japan) and I
think it offers some neat items.
Yes, the items are cheaply priced, but
many items are in much higher quality
than what you would see in a 1 dollar
shop in America.
Yes, I've seen bizarre things at Japanese
Daisos....underwear, is one thing.
But most Japanese know that quality is
what matters. They would rather buy
good quality underwear from a department
store than a 100 yen underwear from Daiso.
Just because Louis Vuitton and Burberry
are big in Japan doesn't mean Japanese
people want to pay more for everything.
I think the Japanese people do like bargains
and cheaper prices; what they don't want
is cheap prices combined with poor quality
like WalMart. Daiso and Uniqlo may be
on the cheap side in Japan pricewise,
but it's quality in their own respects
that makes them sell.
