The Forbidden Starbucks

Tadaima! Just got back from a nice trip to Communist China with Kate. As you can see from the above photo, there really isn't much that is Communist about China anymore other than that whole no right to vote stuff. Actually the Starbucks in the Forbidden City was closed the day we were there, and I get the feeling from this article that it might not be openning again anytime soon*. Still, the very fact that it exists at all speaks volumes about what is going on in China these days. In fact I hear that they're openning a TGI Fridays in the Maosoleum next week.

Anyway, I'm back in Japan but still on vacation so don't expect any updates for a little while longer. Happy Golden Week y'all!

*Update: My parents visited Beijing a couple of weeks after I did and they told me that the Starbucks was open for business the day they were there.

family reunion

Hello, this is uncle ken just letting you know that your cousin Katherine and Andrew have arrived and are staying with us for a few days before they head back to Canada. they’re off driving with Annie to visit the surrounding countryside so I don’t know if I’ll ever see them again. K told me that you have completely changed; ie you walk all over the place to visit strange and exciting places; thats what a girl will do to you/ Give my best to your parents when they arrive and good luck to kate who will pass the “family test” Hope to see you soon for some family reunion but for this to happen there must be some event that would justify the trip. so think about it

Allo uncle Ken!
I don’t know where K gets the idea that I have in any way “changed". Did I not travel twice to France to visit you before, or does that not count as a strange or exciting place? I was thinking of perhaps coming by again and paying you a visit, but without Lance in the big race anymore perhaps there is nothing exciting left in France to do (other than riding in aunt Annie’s cab of course).

I’ll be sure to pass on your well wishes to my folks and I’m sure Kate appreciates your support with the difficult test ahead of her. If you should see K & A again and in one piece, please give them and aunt Annie my best as well.
